Nicholas Brendon audioblog update Feb. 9, 2008
Hellooo everybody. How are we? It’s Nicky, calling from beautiful Venice, California. It’s a magnificent day. The sky is blue-ish. The sea is a brownish-gray. And the birds are flying, with their wings. As birds are ought to do.
Well, it’s been a while since we have talked, and I know that you have a lot to say. So I will, um, listen. OK? And… start talking.
[long pause] *heavy sigh*
I, uh, I can’t hear you, maybe you should speak up a little bit, so, OK…. On the count of three … 1… 2… 3.
[pause]
Yeah … this is really rude. I call to talk to you and you’re not talking to me at all. Hmm, I am fascinated by this. Maybe I’ll do the talking then. Fine, I’ll show you. Well, here we go:
I guess the strike is about to be over, from what I understand. I think they’re talking today, and I think people might be going back to work on Monday, I think. Um, we got a phone call from Criminal Minds and they asked for my availability for the first episode back, which is a good thing. And we’ll find out about Super Cat, I think, soon, which is great, good.
I’ve seen some movies that … blew me away. I don’t know if I talked about this before, or if I saw it in between, but … a little movie called The Orphanage, and if I talked about it before, I sincerely apologize, but Crikey McNike, that this thing is… I saw it twice in a week, alright? And I don’t even speak the language of the film, cause it’s Spanish, but I did speak the language of the film, which is just universally great.
Also, I really enjoyed a little film called There Will Be Blood. Um, you know, ironically — not that much blood. A lot of oil. But not, not much blood. And a fantastic performance by the guy who did My Left Foot, Daniel Day-Lewis. He’s just… he does a little bit of a [goes into accent] Sean Connery. Sean … Sean … Sean Connery. Shh-… Sean. Sean Connery. … Shh…or is it Roger Moore he’s doing? I’m not sure, but it’s a Bond.
Speaking of bonds, how are you all? I feel like this conversation has bonded us, though you didn’t say as much as I was hoping you would say. Things that… make me go, “Hmmm.”
What else is going on? How about that Super Bowl? Amazing. I didn’t… we don’t have a football team here, but if we did, it wouldn’t be the Giants. I was rooting for the Pats, but … what a fantastic situation that happened there.
So I think what else is going on. Ummm, I am going to Disneyland tomorrow with my little brother. You know, I changed his diapers but yet, he’s — 23? Actually, I changed his diapers last week, which is strange, and that’s a different blog.
Um, I think I’m getting a phone call, hold on. [pause] Oh, I am, it’s my manager. Uh, OK, well I’m going to say ‘bye to that… well no… OK… nope, I’ll call him back in a second. Because I think he just hung up on me.
Uh, oh, gosh, I was in Orlando, that was really nice. I’m hoping to do some more meet-and-greets in the future. It was really, really fun to be down there and the people could not have been nicer.
I hope this blog finds you all healthy, wealthy and wise. Wealthy spiritually, and, with cash, too. I mean, why not? Why not be happy spiritually and with cash. I mean, you know that’s…. *dog barks in background*… Hey! … Hey… Emma … Nah-uh … Hey… No… Little Chihuahua over here, doing a … puffing her chest. Emma! … Good girl. She’s got a crush on me… it’s uh… Em-ma! …. It’s kinda weird. But I haven’t acted on it yet. Yet, I mean she’s only five pounds, but I get lonely…
Anyway guys, I promise to do this sooner because what I’ve done, I’ve put it into my phone so I can just call. I can call from the car if I want to… I might just do that. I might just travel around town and take you on a tour of… of my head. And what’s going on in there. Um, right now it’s a little civil war going on, right now. We’ve got the Confederates. They’re losing … to the … the federation. The World Wide Wrestling Federation is kicking the Confederate’s ass right now. Sherman’s marching all over… is there a wrestler by the name of Sherman? ‘Cause if there is, he’s definitely doing his job.
Anywho, hope you’re all well. I will talk to you soon, probably from the car — if not before. That didn’t make any sense, but I’m going to stick to it. Bye y’all, take care. Say ‘bye everybody! Steve — hold on, I’m going to have them all say ‘bye… [those of you wearing earphones should take them off now: starts howling at dogs, dogs start howling back.] There. [More howling, with dogs howling in sync]
Bye.

Hey Nick,
It’s so good to hear from you again, and I’m glad to hear that the writer’s strike is over. I’m sure there’s some happy folks out there who will be glad to go back to work. I’m so excited to hear that the folks from Criminal Minds called to ask about your availability for the next episode. I’ll definatetly be looking forward to seeing you on Criminal Minds again. And, I’m also looking forward to SuperCat. Also, thank you so very much for coming out and doing the Meet and Greets for us. I saw you back when you were at dragoncon in Atlanta and you were so friendly to everyone and it was just really nice to get the chance to finally meet you in person. Anyway, I hope that everything will be well with you too, both spiritually and financially as well. (hugs)

Nick-
Dude, you are one funny guy. I’m now trying to picture the Confederates (with the star and bars) facing off against the WWF… “Ohhhh, Sherman has laid the SMACK DOWN ON THE SOUTH! But wait, here comes ROBERT E LEE and OHHH, the South is still standing….”
Interesting story- I actually got to play six degrees of separation with the Whedon crew…as Joss actually just cameoed in my latest short film. If you are at all interested, here is the link:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WTkX8DF9fOg
When my director colleague called me on the 7th, he wanted to know if I was sitting. I figured he broke the camera. Then he told me that one of my favorite writers had gotten involved in our little vid. Joss apparently was a hell of a nice guy- I wish I could have been there to see it.
Very glad to hear you got the call from the Criminal Minds crew- Kevin is such a fun character in that dynamic, and really, the show needs a little bit of humor now and then. Kevin can hold down the Quantico fort while Garcia heads out in the field- voila! Now they can have two techies. Genius genius geeeeenius…
Anywho…keep up the good work mate. If all goes well, hopefully all of us filmmakers will be back to work by the time you (potentially) read this.

Hey Nicky – Thanks so much for coming down to FX – this was the third FX Show I worked, and sitting between you and Liz all weekend definitely made it the most memorable! I had an absolute blast hanging out and talking with you, and running you and Michael to the Walmart was a trip. Good luck with Supercats and Criminal Minds, and I hope you had fun down in Disney World in Orlando too!

Entertaining as always.
My wife, daughter, and I are making our way through the Buffy series again and are midway through season four — kudos to you for your work on the series. I don’t think you get enough credit for your work.
I’ll watch for you on CM.

Hey Nicky!
Great to hear from you again and glad to know things are going well with you. Things here…not so much, but you know, stuff happens, right? Gotta take the bad with the good. I really wish I was anywhere but Illinois right now. Tonight we’re suppose to more snow to add to the almost foot we got last week.
…Yay. Hmm…maybe I can hop on a plane out to LA…my aunt lives around there somewhere…or did she move again?
Anyway,…dude, the Super Bowl…man, what was up with that?! I think my spirit broke a little after that game. (I was rootin’ for the Pats, too.) My poor mom, having to sit there while I was screaming at the TV during the last coouple of minutes. Brady…what are we gonna do with him? *shakes head defeatedly* Right, moving on.
Congrats on Criminal Minds wanting you back! (We all knew they would.) Kevin was awesome! Definitly keep us updated (on Supercat as well). We’ll all be watchin’.
Hope you and your brother had fun at Disneyland. I haven’t been there since I was 2…I’m 17 now. (I miss it.) I might go with my little sister (who’s currently 5) and my little brother (who’s currently 3) sometime in the near future. I know they’d really like to go.
Note to self: Check out The Orphange. It sounds awesome and I’m in senior class Spanish, so maybe I’ll understand a little of it. (Universally speaking though, I think I’ve got it down.)
There Will Be Blood…it was pretty cool. I couldn’t get that into it, but I think because I was watching it with a group of people who don’t know when to quiet down. Yeah, Daniel Day Louis is an excellent actor. (By the way, I totally agree that he had a “Sean Connery” thing going on.)
Well, sorry for the lengthy comment, but you know, I guess you couldn’t *hear* me the first time, so I figured the written word to be my next best bet.
Thanks for making me (and I’m sure everyone else who listened) laugh and brightening my/our day (or hey, even week)! You rock!
Take care and hope to hear from you again soon…whether it be from a car or… before…hand…ish…yeah. (Bye Emma and Steve!)
Later!
PS: Thanks to Lexie for transcribing this!

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the blog updates, it’s great to hear your news. Not sure how many chihuahuas you have, I’ve got two and I howl and sing with them just as you did lol. Mine are called George and Mildred though, like the old BBC sitcom.
I’m a long-time Buffy fan, but being all the way out here in Australia, it’s not always possible to attend conventions etc, so your Blogs are really appreciated. I’m so thrilled to find that you’ve done an episode of Criminal Minds, one of my favourite TV shows.
Big love to you,
Janet.

I just wanted to leave a message to tell you that these blogs always make me smile. You just talk about everything that comes to mind and while that can be scary it’s always entertaining. I was excited to hear that you’ll return to CM. You did a terrific job on that show and it actually airs here in The Netherlands so I’ll be able to see it. Which is great. I’m sure you did other great things after Buffy too but they kinda forgot to air that here. Bummer, huh? But you can’t have it all in life I guess.
Stay well and thank you for these updates. This is a lovely way to make the people that love to see you act feel appreciated. If only Hollywood had more people like you. You’re cool, man. Oh and good luck with SuperCat. Hope that airs soon!
Greets,
Joyce

Hey Nicky!
Yay! You blogged again! *does a little dance*. I’ve had a seriously long day at the hospital (I’m in nursing school, and do my clinicals in the long-term care ward at the veteran’s hospital – rewarding, but hard, and sometimes sad), and it really cheered me to come home and listen. You crack me up, man!
So thrilled for you in re: Criminal Minds. Your character was adorable, and I can’t wait to see what happens. Also, as a geeky animation buff, I’m totally looking forward to Supercat. The drawings Ben put up on the site looked great.
Disneyland! Did ya buy Mickey ears? Did ya? Did ya? I want pictures. What did you ride? I love amusement parks and need details.
Thanks for doing this, Nick. It’s really sweet of you to give your fans a call, and I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate it.
Lots of Love,
Shannon
PS: You own a German Shepard and a Chihuahua? That’s awesome.

Nick,
I’m so happy that you’re coming back to Criminal MInds. I love that show, and I loved the role you played a while back. I knew they’d have to have you back when the strike was over because you were so great before! So… Yah!! for you!!! I predict recurring this year and contract next season. :nods:
As far as Emma is concerned, it’s probably best to keep the connection a spiritual one. Hah hah. I loved hearing her and all the other dogs singing in the background. I’m surprised they stayed so quiet for so long. Whenever I talk on the phone my two dogs think I’m talking to them, and they bark and bark and bark. Until I hang up the phone, and then they walk off.
Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic. His last movie is on my “to see” list. I’m too much of a chicken to see The Orphanage. I had to cover my eyes all through Pan’s Labyrinth.
Read any good books lately? I highly recommend this Irish writer I’ve been reading lately. His name is Ken Bruen. Crude, vulgar, dark, rude, violent, and HILARIOUS! Check him out!

Right after I listened to this blog entry, a friend of mine (who was listening to it at the same time I waseven though she’s an hour ahead and thousands of miles away) mentioned that, while putting freshly spun yarn on a rack like torture device, I must be wanting my yarn to lay like a murdered hooker…. I have to admit that I *almost* fell out of my chair laughing. I mean seriously, how often does one work that phrase into a conversation, especially over the Internet with a ‘net friend thousands of miles away?
I know you’ve heard this many times before however… I shall inflict it on you again. Congratulations about Criminal Minds, you did wonderfully in that episode and right now it’s the only reason I’m considering buying a t.v. for my living room. Since I don’t have one. Because, well, what’s the point in buying a t.v. for it to collect dust?
Back to the spinning wheel with me…

Just a thought…. Emma isn’t named after Emma Caulfield is she? *scratches head*
February 17th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Loved the dog and human chorus there at the end! My cat, however, seems to want nothing to do with it.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Kevin on “Criminal Minds”! I highly recommend listening to lots of Jonathan Coulton to get in the character’s head; he was just dubbed the Godfather of Geek Rock, and is much beloved by computer genius types. (And I think Xander would be a fan too — what’s not to love about songs about zombies, mad scientists and our future robot overlords?)
I seem to have forgotten how to go to the movies, but since we get a blizzard every other day here in Wisconsin, it’s not like I could get out much anyway. Thanks for the vicarious movie experience!

So glad to hear you’re back at work. Loved you in Criminal Minds and I’m hoping they keep you as a recurring character. Kevin and Garcia are a perfect match.
