Nicholas Brendon audioblog update Nov. 11, 2007

Hello … everybody. Nicholas Brendon. Long time no … hear, I guess … Cause you’re hearing me.

I just got back from Chicago, doing a little meet and greet, and I just wanted to check in with you guys.

First and foremost, I wanted to let everybody that was in Chicago know — and those of you who might hear that I didn’t show up for an event yesterday, a dessert meet-and-greet. I was there, but I was accosted by Jensen and Jared’s personal bodyguards. And it almost … and they tackled us like they were the president back there, and it was just a really bad situation, and so that’s why I did not attend the dessert meet and greet in Chicago. So, it was an unfortunate situation and I was asked to leave by their security guard so … I did.

Um, and then… and that being said, as I stutter … so those of you who know that I’m the spokesperson for the national stuttering foundation have just witnessed that it’s not a lie. We’re going through the strike right now, and you know my Criminal Minds airs on the 21st of this month, which is I think is in less than two weeks. And then we’ll find out when the strike ends if I’m going to be going back to play Garcia’s love interest on that show. It was an awesome, awesome show, and the environment. And there are some people from Buffy behind the scenes. So that was very, very, very nice.

What else is going on. Let’s see here. I think I’m moving, perhaps. Again. I’m a man on the run. I’m either running to or running from someone. I’m not really quite sure who yet.

What else is going on? Into the Wild, good movie. It kind of made me want to travel more, you know what I mean? I didn’t read the book, though. I hear if you read the book you would really want to kind of cut up your credit cards and tear up your cash — don’t. No, I wouldn’t tear up cash, that’s just — or burn cash, actually. As I ramble.

Uh, what else. Um Um Um Um… Somebody brought up, I guess there’s Blood on the Highway, the little movie I did. There’s a trailer for it on, I think, BloodOnTheHighway.com, or you can maybe just Google it and you can see me in my — I’m playing a vampire, a quote-unquote “douchebag vampire.” That was, literally, written in the script.

I promise to be doing this more often. I apologize. Jacqui, the lovely Jacqui, my webmaster, sent me all the information regarding my audioblog, so I’ll be able just to check in, even if I have nothing to promote or say: I’ll just check in. A lot more often than once a year. And that I promise.

So I think with that — the book I’m reading right now is Mysteries of Pittsburgh. Just got done with Dearly Devoted Dexter, which the TV show is based from. And then before that I read The Mulching of America, which I did not particularly enjoy. But I would love to get some of your guys’ feedback on those three books, if you have, or even if you haven’t read them. I love people who just bullshit. If you want to bullshit about books you haven’t read, or even books that don’t even exist, let me know.

Hope you guys are all doing well. I will call you, I will check back in right after Thanksgiving, and I will give you my Thanksgiving bliss. You know what I hate, by the way? You know, people movers at the airport, right? Those little moving walkways on the flat ground. Why the hell, do people stand on them? And then they’ll stand and then they’ll be like a family of 12, you know, from Guatamala — I love Guatamala. Who are just taking up the whole thing. It’s like a little clog in the artery, you know, and it needs an angioplasty. There’s something about walking on those moving walkways that makes you feel superhuman, you know? You’re walking so fast that your long hair blows back — my hair’s long right now, so it just blows back, into the wind that you’re creating. I marvel at those things, and whoever came up with them. I hope they’re doing well financially — or just doing well spiritually. I hope they’re doing well.

All right. Have a good gobble-gobble day. Don’t eat too much. Don’t worry about the calories. If you’re teetering, if you’re kind of on the fence of having that third plate, go for it. Thanksgiving happens once a year, and do not forgive to give thanks. … Do not forget to give thanks. Do not forgive to give thanks… interesting. But give some thanks, and I will talk to you after Thanksgiving.

Hope all is well with ya’ll. This is Nicholas Brendon, saying… goodbye. Goodbye.

    Hey Nick,

Luv that you have an audioblog. So much cooler than other celebs. You rocketh.

    1. Bought the KC DVD and thought it was great. Can’t believe it didn’t get picked up for more episodes. Damn shame if you ask me.

    2. Are you intentionally channeling Steven Segal for Blood on The Highway? If so, great job with the hair :P

    3. I’m reading the new Dexter book but I’m having trouble really getting into it. So far, not loving it like I did the last one. And watching the series is just making me crazy everytime they do something that is radically different from the books - like Dexter’s sponsor (for instance). Arrg. But that’s life I guess. Or Hollywood.

Thanks for blogging. We miss ya. Looking forward to seeing you on Criminal Minds. Have a great turkey day!

    :)

    Wow, an audio blog. Nice.

Anyway, I totally know what you’re talking about with the walkways in airports. Even the name WALKways should give people a hint.

I hope Criminal Minds goes well, as I probably wont get to see it for a while. Hooray for being british and not getting any US shows until at least the first season is over. Bah.

Have a good turkey day and eat too much, or whatever you do on that day.

Ooh, Mysteries of Pittsburgh looks interesting. I’ve only read the first Dexter book, and have pondered reading the rest, but I am just way squicked by, like, severed limbs. Every time I read the description for the second book I just go, “You know what? Uh-uh.”

It was great to see you in Chicago, Nick, you were fantastic and charming as always. (Well, as “always” I imagine you being, since that was my first con.) I was stymied for a question to ask you and then realized I could ask what you’re reading, so to see this post with the answers was amazing. Thanks again for being so warm and wonderful at the Creation Con - you made it great for us!

I wanted to say thank you Nicky for coming to Chicago. I’m sorry it seem to be as great for you as some of the others but we ALL loved having you there. It was my first con and having you there with the bunch was such an added bonus. Have a great Thanksgiving and I look forward to seeing you in Criminal Minds. I’ll check it out just for you :)

Nicky I am so sorry that crap happened to you in Chicago. I was there and you were the highlight of Saturday. You were a real trooper amongst all of us crazy Supernatural fans. I just want you to know that there are so many of us out there who are disgusted it happened and Creation suck for letting it happen. My friend and I came from Ireland and we thought you made Saturday for us. We are also Buffy fans and are still slightly in shock at hearing how you were treated. I hope you aren’t too pissed, although I couldn’t blame you if you were.

Happy Thanksgiving Nicky and take care. Hope to see you again.

    Hi Nicky!

Just want to throw my two cents in there. I was at the con last weekend - came all the way from Ireland - and you were just absolutely brilliant! I was/am such a Buffy fan and I miss it! But seeing you was so great, you made the Saturday.

I can’t believe that shit happened - I’m so pissed at Creation and the bodyguards for doing that. So many of us missed you at the dessert party, but I can definitely understand why you walked out. Damn straight!

Thanks for being there though, you were great fun! Hoep to see you again, and crap like that doesn’t happen again.

Normally I would be much too shy to drop a comment. But bullshitting about books? Oh, I can do that! I devoured the first two Dexter books and had interesting reactions to them. I enjoyed them, but I found the TV series to have greater depth of the characters surrounding Dexter (and when does *that* happen?). It makes sense, in this case, since Dexter thinks of himself as a fake human, and understands that he doesn’t *get* people, so in this rare case we get to see more to LaGuerta and Doakes on TV than we can get from a strictly Dexter POV. However, I liked the self-awareness of his fakeness that ran throughout the books. I don’t think they really started up with that until the second season of the show. Amazing how the show has thoroughly jossed the books, though! There was a slight delay in the third book coming out, and I worried that maybe the author was thrown off his game by the amazing quality of the show, and the way his own storyline had been ripped to confetti. I’m looking forward to reading the new hardcover, but this one’s a library loaner for me.

Yeouch, sorry to hear about the incident. I hope you said “I’ve been thrown out of better places than this!” because, really, how many chances does a person get to say that?

I thoroughly enjoyed the voice post!

So Im kind of a moron and tried posting in here, then was all confused when it didn’t work. Then my brain kicked in and I realized I had to create an account..DUH!!
Anyways, I was at the Chicago con last weekend, and let me tell you, you were the highlight of my weekend! You TOTALLY rocked my socks! I’m sure you dont’ remember me as there were like 3409804958 ppl there, but I first met you in the Starbucks in the lobby and you took a pic with me. That was the best part of my weekend!! Thank you so much for doing that!!!
I was really upset when the Adam guy from Creation said you weren’t gonna be at the desert party…but now that I know why, I totally understand that you didn’t come back. Im really peeved at Creation for that…and kind of at Jared and Jensen too…why didn’t they stop their Mafia bodyguards, ya know. I appreciate you clearing the air though!
HMMM Books…well, I have no idea what the books are that you mentioned, but I will look them up. I love reading James Patterson. Im reading his Women’s Murder Club series now that is also a kick ass TV show!!
AND can’t WAIT to see you on Criminal Minds. I never miss an episode, so Im totally pumped that you’ll be on it!
So speaking of books, i just wrote a novel so I will stop now!!
Thanks again for being so kickass in Chicago!
Have a wonderful Gooble Gobble day (already had mine here in Canada).
    Much Love

    Hi Nicky!

It’s great to hear from you again. I really enjoy your audioblogs and I am looking so very forward to seeing your “Criminal Mind’s” episode. I really hope that after the writer’s strike is over that they will bring you back on the show.

I’m sorry to hear that you got treated that way in Chicago and I hope that the organizers of the convention and Jenson and Jared will apologize to you for what happened. Last year I went to Dragoncon, it was my first convention experience, and I went because I wanted to meet you and I just couldn’t get over how nice you were to all of us fans. I really appreciated that.

As far as books go, I’ve been writing more than I have been reading. So, I will have to look into those books before I can do any educated bs’ing.

And I hope that you and your family have a very happy Thanksgiving Day. (: (hugs you and Kelly, too)

    Hey Nick!

That’s awesome that you have an audioblog.

Thanks for coming to Chicago, it really made my first con a blast and especially meeting you.(Probably don’t remember but I was that short guy who talked with you at the snack bar.) Also, thanks (again) for signing my Kitchen Confidental DVD. I was bragging about it to my pals back home.

Anyway, B-S-ing about books…I don’t read that many good books (I’m sort of poor right now…the curse of being an unemployeed high school student). I do read a bunch of books we’re forced to read at school…and they aren’t that great.
However, I did read this book a while back called “House” and it’s a horror/thriller type of book. There are these people who are seeking shelter inside a house because they’re hiding from some freaky/weird religious killer. There’s quite a few twists in there, but I don’t want to give them away (in case you or anyone else is interested in reading it). It’s a really good book (and I want to make it into a movie so bad!)

Well, I can’t really think of much else to say right now, so take care, have a Happy Thanksgiving and thank you again for coming to Chicago! It rocked! (And sorry about that whole mis-hap with the bodyguard guys…those jerks.)

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Hi Nick,

I think it’s so cool that you do these audioblogs for your fans. Really makes a geeky fangirl feel appreciated, you know?

I’m very much looking forward to seeing you on Criminal Minds this Wednesday. Yay! And I’ll have to check out that Dexter book, just as soon as I’m done with all the books in my literature class.

Totally get the walkway thing. And I’m now picturing you and your long, flowing hair filming a shampoo commercial at the airport. :) Because, as Herbal Essence adds have taught us, people do shampoo in airplane bathrooms.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, and I hope to hear from you again soon.

    Love Shannon.

Criminal Minds tonight was almost enough to make my pretty nerd loving head explode. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it becomes a recurring role for you!

Not that it hasn’t been said here already but I wanted to also say how mad it made me to hear how you were treated in Chicago. You made the weekend for me and thanks for trekking all the way there for us. Hope it doesn’t sour you from doing those sorts of things in the future.

As for books, I always start that conversation by recommending my favorite. Random Acts of Senseless Violence by Jack Womack. It’s a tad dark, but brilliant.

    All the best.

OMG. I loved the newest audio blog, I like it when people ramble, and that was most def one. I haven’t those books, well except for Into the Wild, and that was years ago so maybe I’ll check them out.

I am very happy to see irony in film, and “Blood on the Highway” very much ironic. You “xander” spent all the time slaying vamps and now you’re one, I think it’s cute, can’t wait to see more.

    Hey, doll!
That really sucks about the breakfast. The way they explained it, it sounded like you weren’t even feeling well. I hope you got the card, although the way my mind was functioning that close to mid-night, I can honestly say I don’t remember if I gave it to someone to pass it on. I swear, J & J need to get new bodyguards.

And I totally forgot that Dexter was a book first, so thanks for reminding me. Are you ADHD? Cause not only are you a fellow 4-eyed goof, but to have that to…I have another link to the Nicky. *grins* Anyway, just finished watching CM…nicely done, doll… and my friend from Florida is now officially going goo-goo eyed and swearing a return to CM for ya. It will be at this point that she’ll travel to St. Louis to kill me as I point out she was the one that asked you to take off your hat for a pic at your autograph table. *heh*

I shall now duck and run and I hope your turkey day was a fabulous one!

I remember that this “Blood on the Highway” movie is not your first portrayal of a vampire. You were good as a vampire on “Buffy.” I used to remember the names of all the episodes but that ability/curse is slipping. I do remember it was the third season and it was Anyanka’s first episode as well as that it showed a new (but never seen again) development in your character’s dynamic with Willow, also a vamp for the first time.

Anyway, I read “Mysteries of Pittsburgh” several months ago–during the summer when the novel is set, in fact. Liked it a lot. Thought in its own way it was more satisfying than the same novelist’s more ambitious “Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.” I just finished his “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union” which is also good. My spouse has read most of the Dexter novels but I’ve only seen the TV series, which evidently started out being faithful to the books.

I don’t understand how those two lame actors’ bodyguards could throw you out of a place where you belonged. You need to have your own bodyguards. Or a constant companion who is an attorney. How about a lawyer/bodyguard. That would be a useful combo for all occasions.

I came here to see if you might be back on “Criminal Minds,” and am glad to learn you might be, depending on the strike and all. Mission accomplished, plus left you this note which hadn’t been part of my original plan.

Wow! If there’s anything we can do to encourage you to do this more often, let us know! I hope it’s not too awkward for you - remember you aren’t talking to yourself, you’re talking to the WORLD! Doesn’t that make you feel better? :)

First, I’m amazed there aren’t more comments here since Whedonesque sent me over here and I figured more people read that just me, but hopefully the rest of the world will get caught up on their blog reading over the long holiday weekend and surf on over here and partake of the wonderfulness.

Second, I’m noticing that all except 2 or 3 of us (I’m a little unsure about a name or two) commenting are women, which I think is interesting. I’m a reluctant fangirl, personally; I didn’t start watching Buffy until season 5 or 6, and I’m sort of a Whedon addict now.

Third, I’m so pleased to see you’re reading Michael Chabon’s book! I hope you’re enjoying it. I’m from Pittsburgh and live in Pittsburgh so I have to say I’m not sure a lot of the geography makes sense if you haven’t been here or seen the hills. But how many books star a woman named Phlox? Not that many, I’m sure. Have you read or seen the Wonder Boys? I keep meaning to because he wrote it but I haven’t found the time yet.

Despite all that I have to say, don’t go see the movie when it comes out. Sienna Miller’s in it, and while she was here, she made national news for badmouthing this town. She acted like she’d been sent by her agent to go be on location in the Third World or something. Nobody forced her to be here. She said mean things, she apologized, and we would’ve let it go if she hadn’t turned around and started saying mean things right after that. She’s officially known in my house as “that trashy little actress”.

A lot of times when I let someone know where I’m from or where I live, I get this odd reaction of “I was in Pittsburgh once . . . it was nice!” like it’s a big surprise. I take that in stride. But her comments were just out of line.

On that note, I look forward to your Thanksgiving bliss. I could use a bit of bliss right about now. Peace, y’all.

    Nick,
Nice job on Criminal Minds. I didn’t know you were going to be on it until I caught the last few minutes. I taped it to watch when I felt better. I just had surgery and wasn’t able to stay awake and sit up for long periods of time. I would think another hacker would add to the series which is one of my favorites. I was a fan of Buffy and still am since I own the DVD’s. I started watching when I noticed my 6th grade girls talking about it. Being the protective teacher I am I started watching and got hooked and I am old! Well, not old, old, but not young. Anyway, I will go to CBS.com and praise you and hopefully that will bring you back into series TV where you belong or into a great movie career. Again very nice job and there wasn’t enough of you.

Hi, Nick. I only just came upon your site a couple of days ago, and read up on all your old interviews and postings. It’s nice to be very slightly aquainted with you as a person - and I’m grateful that you take the time to interact with your fans this way. I’m one of those middle-aged BTVS fans who remains a tad obsessed with the show and the characters. There really has been precious little on TV since that show ended that even comes close to captivating my imagnination the way it did. I’m forced to read books (oh, the horror!) to find worlds I want to escape into. Anyway, you know you were part of a big deal and that it wouldn’t have been what it was without you. I’ll check back in to see what you’re working in, because it’s nice for an old lady like me to be able to turn on the tube and see a familar face I have been so fond of for so long. All the very best to you!

Ohhh books! I can talk about those….

I loved the first Dexter novel. As much as I didn’t want to (I mean, a SERIAL killer as your anti-hero, ffs?) but I did. As unlikable and inhuman as Dexter should be, he was still likable. And I suspect, he’s not as inhuman as he tells himself he is. He’s certainly warped, and who wouldn’t be having witnessed so much murder and violence so personally as a child, but he’s not completely detached.

I plan to get the other two books for Christmas, when I don’t feel so bloody greedy spending money on myself instead of the kiddos.

Haven’t read the other two books you mentioned, but I do have some I finished recently and enjoyed.

    American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Devil In the White City - Erik Larsen
The Dresden Files series - Jim Butcher (the TV series was good, but the novels are better!)
The Incarnations of Immortality series - Piers Anthony

Well this is the first blog I’ve ever read/heard, and it was awesome

I wasn’t in Chicago, but I saw you doing the Snoopy Dance on you tube, which made my week. I than showed the clip to my mom, dad, brothers, and best friend… sorry

So, you want to talk books Mr. Brendon, that I can do. I just finished re-reading Anne Bishop’s The Black Jewels Trilogy for the millionth time; currently I’m reading the new murder mystery by Donna Andrews The Penguin Who New Too Much; and as Christmas is fast approaching it’s time for my semi-annual re-read of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what can I say, the holidays make me nostalgic.

Since this is my first blog post, I might as well embarrass myself completely by saying: when Buffy first aired I was 8, so I kind of grew-up with you and the rest of the group always being around, and I wanted to say thanks for being there, even though you didn’t know it. I’m the youngest of five kids, and the only girl, (that’s why my screen name’s FiveOfFive, we always used to sound off using out Borg designations, geeky I know), and y’all just made life seem better, or easier when I really needed it, so thanks again and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Audio blog…very cool idea!!

Congrats on criminal minds. I can’t wait ’til it airs here in Australia - I have to admit, I’ve missed seeing you on the TV. Which is kinda strange considering I still go to bed with you EVERY night - in a platonic, DVD, Xanda kinda way…

Yeah, I know…I’m pathetic! I own the BTVS collection - the whole series and just keep changing the discs night after night - oh, and not any way is it a compulsive, obsessive, over the top, middle aged fan kinda way. I just enjoyed, and still do, the show, humor and characters….

I don’t get to read much these days, unless its a text book that is….

Anyways, in fear of coming across like nut - and because I feel slightly like a wanka for leaving messages for someone I don’t know….I shall leave it here…

Congrats again and I hope the strike is settled soon and that you get some more air time on Criminal Minds - Here’s to you and your success!

As Dianna said, there is very little to watch on television these days and very few shows have been as fun to watch as Buffy and Angel. I miss getting to see new episodes…..I guess I am a pathetic, middle aged woman myself since I, too, watch my dvd’s every day only I watch them while at work. (My husband and I have a small grocery store around the horse farms of Kentucky and being one of the proprietors, I get to say what I do and what I watch….Yeah me!) Anyway, it’s amazing how many people in different age categories will come in, hear the television and say, “You’re watching Buffy aren’t you? I loved that show!” Then naturally, we discuss how great the writing was, the acting, how there was no one star on that show and it was a great ensemble of characters, who our favorite characters were which around here was you, James, Alyson and Charisma and how we would have written the show, etc, etc. I just recently bought the KC DVD’s and have been watching them and all the regulars are stunned that I’m watching something different until I tell them, “Nick is on this show….” “Oh” they reply, nodding their heads, remembering that I’m a huge fan of yours. Unfortunately, I did not get to see you on Criminal Minds and have been searching everywhere online to see if I can watch it or download it, whatever but so far no luck. However, I’m sure you were great as always. Oh, and by the way, I love the look….saw you on youtube at the con. I’ve always loved your hair long. That’s why seasons 1, 3, 4 and 5 are my favorites. And speaking of the convention, I hadn’t heard or read about what happened and I’m sorry that you were treated that way. I hope that Jensen or Jarrod weren’t a part of that in any way other than that being their bodyguards, and if they heard the got rid of them because the only show I have been watching faithfully since Buffy and Angel went off the air is Supernatural, and I would hate to think that they had the big heads, you know? I’ve always felt that most of the Buffy cast were always down to earth and great with their fans, especially you and I was hoping they’re the same way. Speaking of Supernatural, I believe that the creator of Supernatural is a big fan of Buffy because in one episode two characters (who remind you of the evil trio minus one) are sitting around saying something like WWBD….What would Buffy do? Also, they’ve had Amy Acker, Julie Benz and Amber Benson (who played a vampire) on their show and I was hoping that we might get to see some of the men from BTVS or Angel on there as well in guest starring roles. I really miss seeing you on television every week and I hope that you get a recurring role on Criminal Minds….never watched the show but believe me, if you are on it, I’ll watch it. Have a great holiday and God Bless!

    Hey Nick!

Thanks so much for posting an audioblog; I’ve been following you for awhile but I just found this site (ten minutes ago) and I’d just like to say that you’ve made some of my days that sucked much brighter with your acting on the show. Also, I stuttered as a kid and I still stumble and mispronounce when I don’t pay attention to what I’m saying, and it’s cool to hear you talking and know that your normal (well, normal as anybody can really be), I mean just that you’re an actor and you still have human flaws and all that . . .

Okay, I’ll stop babbling and being an idiot now :), thanks so much!

(Sorry about what happened to you at the Con by the way :(

    Much love and cheer,
    Colette
